Dear friend on Monday evening,
Misun asked for the word that came to Abram in the dark, right after a great victory and, strangely, a wave of fear. It is the first time God ever calls himself this, and he pairs it with a promise most of us never quite believe.
“After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: ‘Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.’” (Genesis 15:1)
🌟 Hebrew Focus
The word is magen, מָגֵן, “shield.” (It is the same magen in Magen David, the “Shield of David,” the star.) And Genesis 15:1 is the very first time in all of Scripture that God calls himself this. Notice exactly what he says: not “I will give you a shield,” but “anokhi magen lakh“, “I am a shield to you.” He does not hand Abram a piece of armor and step back. He puts himself between Abram and the threat. Your protection is not a thing God provides. It is God, personally, standing in the way of what you fear.
And there is a second word here that is just as tender: “your reward shall be very great.” The Hebrew is sakhar, a laborer’s wages, the payment you have earned and are owed. Now feel the timing. This comes right after Abram had refused a reward, he had just won a battle and told the wicked king of Sodom, keep your plunder, I will not take a thread. He gave up the payday. And into that empty-handed moment God says, “your reward shall be very great.” As if to say: you turned down a reward; now let me tell you what your real one is.
Because the deepest reading of the verse is that God is not just promising Abram a shield and a reward. He is saying, in Hebrew, “I am your shield”, and, right beside it, “I am your reward.” The protection is God, and the prize is God. He is both the safety you hide behind and the treasure you were made for. Not his gifts, standing in for him. Him.

📖 The Pattern
He is the shield, not the supplier of one. There is a world of difference between “God will protect me” and “God is my protection.” The first can leave you waiting on a delivery, wondering if the armor will arrive in time. The second means the protection is already here, because he is here. When you are afraid tonight, do not ask God to send help from far off. Hide behind the One who is already standing between you and it.
The reward is not the plunder. Abram’s fear came, oddly, right after his triumph, and God’s answer was to redirect his idea of reward. So much of our anxiety is about paydays we are afraid we will miss, the recognition, the security, the thing we think we are owed. God gently says what he said to Abram: those are not your reward. I am. Let go of the thread of Sodom, and find that you were holding out for far too little.
God himself, the exceeding great reward. This is the promise Christians can too easily shrink. We hope God will give us good things, and he does. But Genesis 15 aims higher: the gift is the Giver. Heaven’s reward is not mainly streets of gold; it is God. “The LORD is a sun and shield“, the psalmist sings, “no good thing does he withhold” (Psalm 84:11), and the best good thing he does not withhold is himself. Your shield and your reward have the same name.
🛤️ Practice
Change “will protect” to “is my protection.” Name the fear you’re carrying to bed, and say it: not “God, send help,” but “God, you are my magen, right here between me and this.”
Name the reward you’re clutching. What payday, praise, or security are you anxious about? Hold it up next to the promise: “You are my reward.” Loosen your grip on the smaller thing.
Want the Giver, not just the gifts. Tonight, ask for God himself, not only his help. Practice saying, “You are enough. You are the reward.”

LORD, you did not tell Abram you would send a shield. You said, “I am your shield.” So tonight I stop waiting for protection to arrive from far away, and I hide behind you, who are already here, standing between me and what I fear. And you are not only my magen. You said, “your reward shall be very great”, and the reward is you. Forgive me for holding out for smaller paydays, the praise, the security, the thread of Sodom. You are my exceeding great reward. My shield and my treasure have the same name: yours. Amen.
