EVENING POST: שְׁאֵלָה (She’elah) — Question
Question: She’elah for Tonight 🌙
(note: we apologize, we forgot to post this for last night’s evening post, today will have 2 posts as a result. Thank you for your understanding.)
Dear Friend at nightfall,
Sometimes you don’t lose peace because you lack information.
You lose peace because the unknown gets filled in with assumptions.
You don’t know what someone meant, so your mind writes a story.
You don’t know how tomorrow will go, so you predict the worst.
You don’t know why God is delaying, so you assume distance.
Tiny hope tonight is a different move.
Not more certainty.
Not more rehearsing.
A question.
The Hebrew word is שְׁאֵלָה (she’elah) — question, inquiry, something asked.
🌟 Hebrew Focus: Proverbs 18:13; Psalm 139:23–24; James 1:5
English (Prov 18:13): “If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.”
Hebrew (Ps 139:23, phrase): חָקְרֵנִי אֵל וְדַע לְבָבִי
Transliteration: Chakreni El v’da levavi
English: “Search me, O God, and know my heart.”
English (Jas 1:5): “If any of you lacks wisdom, let them ask God…”
🔍 Beginner Hebrew
שְׁאֵלָה (she’elah) = question
Think: an honest inquiry that opens space for truth.
Plain-English definition for tonight:
She’elah = “Replace one anxious assumption with one honest question.”
📖 The Pattern
Assumptions feel efficient.
But they are usually expensive.
They cost you peace.
They cost you relationships.
They cost you sleep.
A question slows the story down.
A question brings you back to what is actually known.
A question makes room for God to guide the next step instead of fear guiding the whole night.
🛤️ Practice (3 minutes): The One Honest Question
Put your phone out of reach.
Take one slow breath.
Name the assumption that’s been loud:
“I keep assuming ___.”
Replace it with one honest question (choose one):
“What is actually true right now?”
“What do I know, and what do I not know?”
“What is the next right thing?”
“God, what are You inviting me to trust?”
Write one small next step:
“Tonight, I will ___.”
🎯 Reflection & Prayer
Where has your mind been writing the story lately?
What would change if you asked instead of assumed?
Prayer: “God, teach me she’elah. Give me wisdom to ask before I assume, and courage to live by what is true. Search me, steady me, and show me the next right thing. Amen.”
