Hi friend, welcome to tonight's vowel adventure!
This morning you met three Hebrew letters. Tonight, we're bringing them to LIFE with vowels! Hebrew vowels are tiny marks that appear under (or around) letters. They're like the breath that makes letters speak. We'll start with two simple vowels that will let you read your first real Hebrew words. Ready to make Hebrew sing?
Tonight's Vowel Goals
What You'll Learn:
See: Hebrew vowels are marks, not letters
Learn: Two basic vowel sounds
Practice: Combining letters + vowels
Read: Your first Hebrew words
Appreciate: Biblical precision
Hebrew Vowels Are Different!
English vs. Hebrew Vowels:
English: A, E, I, O, U are letters
Hebrew: Vowels are dots and lines added to letters!
Example:
ב = just "B" (no vowel)
בַ = "BA" (with vowel)
בָ = "BAH" (different vowel)
The letter stays the same, vowel changes the sound!
Vowel #1: Patach _
Meet Patach - The Short "A"
Name: Patach (pah-TAKH)
Look: Single horizontal line ַ
Sound: Like "a" in "cat"
Position: Under the letter
Patach in Action:
Letter + Patach = Sound
אַ = "a" (Aleph + patach)
בַּ = "ba" (Bet + patach)
גַ = "ga" (Gimel + patach)
Practice Reading:
בַּת (Bat)
בַּ = "ba"
ת = "t"
Say: "BAHT"
Means: Daughter
גַּל (Gal)
גַּ = "ga"
ל = "l"
Say: "GAHL"
Means: Wave
Vowel #2: Kamatz
Meet Kamatz - The "Ah" Sound
Name: Kamatz (kah-MAHTZ)
Look: T-shaped mark ָ
Sound: Like "a" in "father"
Position: Under the letter
Kamatz in Action:
Letter + Kamatz = Sound
אָ = "ah" (Aleph + kamatz)
בָּ = "bah" (Bet + kamatz)
גָ = "gah" (Gimel + kamatz)
Practice Reading:
אָב (Av)
אָ = "ah"
ב = "v"
Say: "AHV"
Means: Father
בָּא (Ba)
בָּ = "bah"
א = (silent)
Say: "BAH"
Means: He came
Spot the Difference!
Patach vs. Kamatz:
Look Carefully:
Patach ַ = single line (like minus sign)
Kamatz ָ = T-shape (like little table)
Sound Difference:
Patach ַ = short "a" (cat)
Kamatz ָ = "ah" (father)
Practice Pairs:
גַּל (gal) = wave
גָּל (gahl) = rolled
See how one tiny mark changes everything?
Your First Sentences!

Practice Exercises
Mix and Match:
Using א, ב, ג with ַ and ָ
Write these combinations:
אַ אָ (a, ah)
בַּ בָּ (ba, bah)
גַּ גָּ (ga, gah)
Word Building:
Can you read these?
גָּב (gav) = back
אַב (av) = father
בַּג (bag) = error
גַּב (gav) = responded
Why These "Small Marks" Matter
Biblical Precision:
Without Vowels: בת could be "bat" (daughter) or "beit" (house of)
With Vowels:
בַּת = definitely "daughter"
בֵּית = definitely "house"
These tiny marks preserve God's exact words!
Your Reflection:
"How does learning about these 'small marks' change your appreciation for the precision of the Hebrew Bible?"
Every dot and line was carefully preserved for thousands of years so you could hear God's Word exactly as intended!
