Biblical Examples
Genesis 1:1
בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ
Can you spot the two ה's?
הַשָּׁמַיִם (ha-shamayim) = THE heavens
הָאָרֶץ (ha-aretz) = THE earth
Not just any heavens and earth - THE specific ones God created!
Psalm 23:1
יְהוָה רֹעִי "The LORD is my shepherd"
But wait - no ה on יְהוָה! Why? Names don't need "the" - they're already specific!
When to Use ה
Use "The" For:
Specific Things:
הַסֵּפֶר (THE book - that specific one)
הַמֶּלֶךְ (THE king - not just any king)
Things Already Mentioned: First time: "I saw מֶלֶךְ (a king)" Second time: "הַמֶּלֶךְ (THE king) was tall"
Unique Items:
הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ (THE sun - only one!)
הַיָּרֵחַ (THE moon)
Don't Use "The" For:
Names:
דָּוִד (David) never הַדָּוִד
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם (Jerusalem) not הַיְרוּשָׁלַיִם
General Statements:
"I like לֶחֶם (bread)" - bread in general
Practice Adding ה
Try These:
יוֹם (yom) = day
Add ה: _______ = the dayלַיְלָה (laylah) = night
Add ה: _______ = the nightאָב (av) = father
Add ה: _______ = the father
Answers:
הַיּוֹם (ha-yom)
הַלַּיְלָה (ha-laylah)
הָאָב (ha-av)
Why ה Means "Behold!"
Ancient Picture:
The letter ה originally looked like a person with arms raised saying "Hey! Look at this!"
That's perfect for "the" - it points to something specific!
When you say הַמֶּלֶךְ (THE king), you're saying "Behold! THIS king!"
