Shalom, Hebrew Bible Reader!
Today isn't just another lesson – it's your graduation moment! After mastering letters, vowels, prepositions, and grammar patterns, you're ready for the most thrilling milestone in Hebrew learning: reading your first complete Bible verse in the original language.
🎯 Your Historic Moment: Genesis 1:1
Hebrew Text: בראשית ברא אלהים את השמים ואת הארץ
Let's Read It Together, Word by Word:
בראשית (be-re-SHEET) = "In the beginning"
Notice the ב (be) preposition from yesterday's lesson!
Root: ר-א-ש (R-A-S) meaning "head, beginning, first"
ברא (ba-RA) = "created"
Root: ב-ר-א (B-R-A) meaning "to create, to make something from nothing"
This is the special Hebrew word for divine creation!
אלהים (e-lo-HEEM) = "God"
Notice the plural ending ים- (im) from Thursday's grammar lesson
Yet used with singular verbs – the majestic plural of divine majesty
את (et) = direct object marker
This little word has no English equivalent but shows that "the heavens and the earth" are the objects being created
השמים (ha-sha-MA-yeem) = "the heavens"
ה (ha) = "the" (definite article)
שמים (shamayim) = heavens (always plural in Hebrew!)
ואת (ve-et) = "and [direct object marker]"
ו (vav) = "and" from Wednesday's conjunctive lesson
את (et) = object marker again
הארץ (ha-A-retz) = "the earth"
ה (ha) = "the"
ארץ (eretz) = earth, land
🌟 The Complete Reading:
בראשית ברא אלהים את השמים ואת הארץ
“Be-re-sheet ba-ra E-lo-heem et ha-sha-ma-yeem ve-et ha-a-retz"
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."
